drawn to the fire...pit

Monday night my friend K invited me over for dinner and a walk. Afterwards we sat by her fire pit and had a cocktail.
It was the most relaxed I've been in a really long time.
Listening to the wood crackle and pop, watching the fire flare up
then burn down.
It got me thinking about the backyard fire pit and the different styles and
the elements needed.

Moody oasis.

Built in backyard simplicity.

Modern, gas, concrete on a roof deck.

Mediterranean getaway.

California retreat.
Modern and rustic hideaway.

There are all kinds of fire pits, free standing, built in, modern, rustic, gas, propane....you need to decide what fits your style and budget.

Some accessories for the yard:
String lights brighten the yard, a basket of washable blankets to keep everyone warm, and bunches of dried sage to burn (supposedly keeps the bugs away).

Of course you need comfortable chairs to sit around the fire.
There is always the popular adirondack chair or my fave the butterfly chair.
But really, any comfy chair will do! It's all about the fire!

Happy Fire Pitting!

website to Chairish

Chairish is a website where you can buy and sell pre-loved furniture.
I'm in love with it!
It blows Ebay away!
The pictures are clear, the descriptions concise and well, descriptive.
It is fun and easy to use! Searches are simple, even your 3 year old could do it.
There is a ton of mid-century furniture (and other centuries too)
at pretty great prices!
They have witty and inventive curator-featured events daily.
This week is Dad focused for Father's Day with events named
Surfer Dad (my fave), Daddy Wanna Cocktail? and Designer Dad.

Here's some of my favorite mid-century, laid-back, California Surfer Dad furniture and accessories from this event.  Your Dad doesn't even have to be
a surfer to appreciate!

Vintage Bamboo Swivel Rocking Chair
Stylized Decorative Metal Surfboards

Reclaimed Natural Celestial Lamp

Vintage Percival Lafer Brazilian Safari Sofa
Vintage G-Plan Teak Dining Chairs

kitchen nook

Kitchen nooks are great for many reasons! They're casual, you can squeeze in a boat load of people and don't need a lot of space...hence the name, nook.
I grew up with a kitchen nook like the one above.
The whole family squeezed in together at 6pm for dinner.
Ahhh the memories.

You can go the built-in route if you have the money, the talent or the room. These are stylish examples of what you can do with a built-in banquet.

But...if you don't have the talent or the space then
you need to be more creative.
I like to use unexpected furniture in unusual places.
How about an armless settee or
love seat as your banquet. Pair it with a small table and
a couple of eclectic chairs and you have yourself a nook.

Add in a interesting pendant light and artwork.

Or even a weathered picnic table bench for your seating with
some comfy pillows to brighten things up.
The options are limitless.

Just make sure the height of the seating is correct for your table, you want to be able to put your legs under the table comfortably.
The seat height should be approximately 18" from the floor,
but if you're using a vintage table double check this first.

white & fringe

Generally I'm an all black outfit kind of gal.
But my niece told me all white was "In" this summer so I did some research
and she was right!
Not only is it chic looking but I'm sure it's really cool in hot weather.  I really like it paired with neutral accessories but it's just as nice with a pop of color.
What do you think?

They say what goes around comes around and fringe is coming around, again.  It was big in the 1970's and this year it's big again.  Me, I'm happy about it!
 It's fun and swingy and
reminds me of disco balls and Saturday Night Fever!
White with some fringe done by my stylist and niece Madison McBirney. She is a stylist on Keaton Row where you can have your own free stylist like the celebrities...
