funky fireplaces

I'm such a child of the sixties and seventies.  I just love all the cool, stylish things from that era! These funky, conical, brightly colored fireplaces are definitely on the top of that list!
They are making a comeback because people are in love with mid-century style.
Three main companies made them back then: Malm, Majestic and Preway.  Only Malm and Majestic are still in biz and only Malm is still making this style.

They are freestanding so they can be used anywhere, and I mean anywhere!
Outside, inside, in a corner, in the middle of a room, you get the picture.  The colors are fab too, like avocado, burnt orange, mandarin red and inca gold.
The style is still relevant today.
What do you think?

I've seen them on Craig's List, Ebay, and specialty websites for
 1977 Avocado Preway.

I'd love one on my patio...I'm thinking they'd be less smoky then a fire pit.

sparkling sangria

Here's a refreshing drink to help celebrate another summer weekend.
It's a twist on sangria, made with white wine and champagne.
And it has lots of fresh summer fruit too! Feel free to use what is fresh now.
  • 1 (750 mL) bottle white wine-something crisp
  • 1 (750 mL) bottle sparkling white wine-like Prosecco
  • 2 peaches, sliced
  • 2 kiwis, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup raspberries
  • 3 tablespoons sugar, or more, to taste
  • 8 sprigs mint
  • In a large pitcher, whisk together white wines, peaches, kiwis, raspberries and sugar.
  • Let chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  • Serve over ice, garnished with mint, if desired.
  • Makes 8 servings

DIY cafe curtains

Anyone who knows me well knows I am NOT a DIY'er. So this is probably going to be a first and last post of this kind.  I came across the picture to the bottom right a few years ago
and it inspired me to make these curtains.
I bought the tension rods, spray painted them to match the clips
and found some colorful, cotton dish towels at Crate & Barrel...that's it!
I had custom, no-sew, cafe curtains for my kitchen.
I used dish towels but you can use fabric and sew simple hems around the
edges. There are also curtain rods that mount to the outside of the window.

try it! great for kitchens, bathrooms, mud rooms...anywhere
you need a lil curtain!

to kilim or not to kilim...

Amber Interiors Design
One of the many elements of the laid-back California esthetic is vibrant global prints. In the kitchen you can bring in a colorful, patterned Kilim
(key-leem), oriental or persian rug. They can be found vintage, antique or new. I like them a bit worn and frayed.
There are tons of colors and sizes to choose from and they pair well
with mid-century modern furniture.
They add a layer of vibrant color, texture and warmth to any kitchen.

quest for the ultimate beach chair

Every year I buy a beach chair.
And every year I seek the best beach chair ever built.
I have so many beach chairs that people don't need to bring chairs to the beach when they meet me because I have a trunk full.

I want one that is cool to look at.
